Next month sport climbing will get the confirmation for being a new Olympic sport for the Tokyo 2020.
On 3 August there will be a session of an International Olympic Committee (IOC) where they are going to announce that sport climbing will appear in the program for 4 years time.
This proposal is supported unanimously by the executive board of the IOC
There will be other new sports included in Olympic sports. Next month’s meeting will add skateboarding, surfing, karate and baseball/softball.
Including new sports into Olympic games the Future Games hosts will get the opportunity to bring in one or more sports popular in their country. It will increase ratings and attract more sponsorship.
There are 28 Olympic sports in the current event program.
This year more than 20 male golfers refused from taking part in the Olympic games as many citing concern over Zika virus.
According to statement of IOC president Thomas Bach the Committee will consider the absences when they decide about the schedule of the Tokyo 2020.
The IOC is going to include 5 new sports for focusing on young people. These changes will be “most comprehensive evolution of the Olympic programme in modern history”.
According to the rules of Sport climbing the participants scale permanent anchors, such as bolts, fixed to the rock.
There are climbing walls in more than 140 countries. The total amount of climbers is 35 million around the world. There are 40% climbers under 20 while the average age of climbers is 23.
